About the club
Martock and District Woodturning Club was established in 1993 at Yandles & Sons in Martock and we are very pleased to have reached our 25th anniversary in 2018! In 2010 we moved venue for our evening meetings to Ash Recreation Pavilion. We continue to enjoy support from Yandles who enable us to use their training room for our practical sessions and to have a stand at their Autumn show and other craft days. Please come along and chat to us at one of these shows, where you may also see our members helping with the parking.
Club nights
There is a monthly club night held at Ash Pavilion, usually on the last Tuesday of the month at 7pm. At these evenings we have a demonstration by either a visiting woodturner or by club members. We use a KS Midi Pro lathe (No’ 2 Morse Taper, M33 x 3.5 Thread) for our demonstrations which are supported by a portable video camera linked to a 42” flat screen television to enable our club members to see the action clearly. This is usually a woodturning demonstration but occasionally interspersed with other related talks or demonstrations such as French Polishing and Marquetry. Members are encouraged to bring along any project they have recently completed to show other members and to seek criticism or advice.
Practical Sessions
On Saturdays, usually once a month, there is a practical hands-on session at Yandles training room where we have the use of their lathes. From 10am in the morning there are supported activities for beginners / improvers and the session typically starts with a short introduction and demonstration of the project to be covered. Club members are then encouraged to practise the skills shown, supported by more experienced club members. In the afternoon, more experienced turners have the chance to share expertise or try out new techniques.
Other Events
Once or twice a year, we have an all day demonstration by a visiting top professional turner, held at Ash Pavilion (there is usually an extra charge for this).
Occasionally we have social events or visits to places of interest. Visits to timber yards are always popular!
